Seeking to change the price-point of the novel but relatively expensive 1800GT, Marcos looked to Ford’s 1500cc Pre-Crossflow Kent engine, an accessible and reliable power unit that could be paired with a plethora of affordable modifications for more performance. In addition to the new engine, a less complex front subframe and dashboard structure were introduced in an effort to further combat production time and cost.
This 1966 example is a usable classic which has the foundations of a wonderful car. Subjected to a partial restoration by Marcos Heritage around 5 years ago, the bodywork was re-painted, interior re-trimmed and electrical work completed amongst other minor items such as the fitting of an aluminium fuel tank. The metallic blue paintwork presents very well, and it complements an immaculate, period-correct red vinyl interior well. The dashboard, new and finished with burr walnut veneer, holds new Lucas switchgear and classic Smiths white over black instruments.
Mechanically, this 1500 is in reasonable condition, the engine bay looking ‘original’, with a few upgrades to increase its usability – period Stromberg 150 CD carburettors have been fitted along with an electronic ignition unit. The subframe and Triumph steering and suspension components are functional but have some surface corrosion and would benefit from stripping and powder-coating. Underneath, the wood chassis appears to be in largely reasonable condition from our visual inspection, though we did note an area of soft wood in the boot floor.
