Using the Mantara as a base, Marcos launched the more affordable GTS model in 1997 to cater to a changing market. A more affordable proposition than the V8 Mantara, the GTS used Rover’s 4-cylinder Tomcat engine, a unit with roots going back to the B-Series. An alloy 16 valve head and modern injection and ignition systems brought power in-line with that of the base Rover 3.9 V8, with the advantage of being lighter and more frugal.
This 1998 example features the updated ‘Mantaray’ bonnet and a factory hardtop painted in a contrasting blue. Accompanied by an extensive history folder, this GTS has been maintained to the highest standard throughout its 27 years on the road – including documentation from the car’s purchase and first services at the Marcos factory up to invoices from the past year.
Finished in optional Arden Metallic Blue and sitting on OE Valbrem 15″ wheels, this Marcos is in great condition cosmetically. The engine bay is clean and tidy and, on the inside, a black leather interior is complimented by a Burr Elm dashboard and a modern radio head-unit. An electrically adjustable pedal carriage, electric windows and a heated windscreen are all present and functional.
This GTS drives as exactly as one would expect – the light T16 power-unit provides ample power and an enjoyable exhaust note in combination with the turbo. Adjustable dampers on all corners and AP 4-Pot alloy calipers provide firm road-holding and excellent stopping capabilities.
